Barathon is a timed running and drinking event. It was inspired by a 6-beer, 6-mile event in New Orleans, but despite the name, does not generally take place at bars. The event consists of running 5 laps of a one-kilometer course, drinking a 12 oz. beer (8 oz. for ladies) from a clear plastic party cup before each lap, all while the clock is running. Unlike in "beer mile" events, puking is an immediate disqualification (DQ) and is strongly discouraged. The official beer of Barathon is Bud Light.
The first Barathon using these "official" distances and amounts took place in Haverford, PA in 2006 with 5 participants. Started by Greg Nash, it is still run annually; however, it has moved to Colorado. With Barathon's departure from Pennsylvania, Barathon East Coast was founded in 2010 by Ryan Doherty and took place in Ardmore, PA for three years before moving to Lancaster, PA, where it has been run since 2013. Barathon Delaware was started by Rob Harford in 2012 and is also ongoing.
Now known as the Delaware BEERathon, this event has its own website where you can peruse current news, past results and history.
